Wetting agents are used to help nutrient solutions penetrate the substrate so that they can delivered successfully to root systems. They work by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing it to spread out evenly over anything that it comes into contact with. This makes it easier to water substrates that have dried out. It also helps substrates to retain more water, helping to protect them from drought.
